iPod Touch Vs. iPhone: Pros and Cons

January 8th, 2010

The iPod Touch seems to stand alone in its field. It has very little competition, and what there is, isn’t much of a threat. There are a lot of reasons for this, and various industry watchers will offer their own opinions as to which reasons are most relevant. Frankly though, the various reasons that the iPod Touch has maintained its dominance is due to a combination of pretty much all of the noticeable factors.

The iPod touch has a number of unique offerings that set it apart. First and foremost are the multi-touch screen and the accelerometer. These two things make the iPod Touch stand out very clearly in the marketplace, allowing it to do some pretty cool things. Add to that things like WiFi internet access and its direct connection to the dominant iTunes music and App store, and the device just gets better.

And now for a question that has plagued philosophers for far too long. Which is more worthwhile, an iPod Touch, or an iPhone? After all, is an iPod Touch not capable of nearly all the same things? Are those similar features not the main reasons for buying either device in the first place? Solving this problem requires a bit of knowledge, a bit of logic, and a lot of comparison.

Now let’s assume that there really is an option out there for you to get either device. Not everyone is in that situation. Taking into account that most people won’t buy themselves out of an existing contract with a non-iPhone-carrying network, it’s safe to say that a lot of people just can’t consider the iPhone an option right now. If you are one of those people, most every point in favor of the iPhone becomes irrelevant, and you should just be satisfied with the Touch for the time being.

An iPod Touch owner gets to save a lot of money. An iPhone costs about the same, depending on the model, but only when a long contract is signed. Without the contract, the Touch is 0 less expensive. Then to justify spending that extra money, iPhone owners must spend around a month extra so as to get internet via their cellular provider. The overall cost of an iPhone, once an AT&T contract is done with, is in the thousands.

With all of that in mind, consider life with the iPod Touch. You can play the same games as iPhone users, you can watch the same videos and play the same music. If you want to take a picture, you use your camera or your cell. If you want to make a call, use that same cheap cell. If you want to surf the net though? Well, there’s the kicker. But remember the WiFi? WiFi is now available all over the place. Cafes offer it for free, as do bars and restaurants. It’s likely offered in your place of work and, in bigger cities, it’s possibly offered on the sidewalks as well. That means you have internet in almost as many places as the iPhone owners. To take this further, if you want to make a call you can still use your Touch, so long as you are nearby one of those abundant WiFi networks.

With all of that in mind it’s clear why the iPod Touch is the better choice. While people who are in the market for such a device shouldn’t be shy to start shopping around, they shouldn’t be surprised if it’s the Touch that ends up in their cart.

Thanks to the iPod, we now listen to music in an entirely different way. But it’s not just the sound that people are interested in. An iPod can also be a fashion statement, and there are lots of iPod gadgets that can dress up your device. Learn more at Gizmos, Gadgets and Toys.
