The Impact of Cell Phones on Personal Safety

Whether you like it or not, cell (mobile) phones have become a standard accessory for people living in the developed world. Their rise to the most popular personal gadget ever has been a controversial one. Certain groups of people claim that mobile phones are responsible for causing some cancers and others argue that they offer children a level of freedom that they are not ready for. However, what people tend to agree on unanimously is that mobile phones have connected people all over the world and this has had the knock on effect of making people’s lives safer

There was a dilemma faced by parents up and down the country when mobile phones finally arrived on the mass markets. Most instantly recognised that being able to keep in touch with their children, whenever and wherever has huge benefits for their safety. However, there were the inevitable concerns about how children would be using their phone and if they would be targeted by thieves given the expense of phones. After a couple of years it became obvious that the benefits far outweighed the risks, and soon every child in the developed world had their own phone on their bedside tables.Further more, the risk of being a theft victim was dramatically reduced when service providers enabled people to block their phones if they had been stolen. Children where able to carry phones around with them wherever they went without the risk of coming into harm from someone wanting to steal it.

The improved overall safety is not just limited to children either. Many adults have found the benefits of being able to call help when they have been in a car accident, find where the nearest hospital is, or even find their way home in a blizzard. Simply by enabling anyone and everyone to be reachable and to reach out, mobile phones have prevented many potentially dangerous situations and minimised the harm of many others. The rate at which phones progress is also quite staggering and their are new features being added all the time that can potentially help safety in more ways.
