Kindle 2 Amazon , Latest Generation, Reading Device: Best Review!

Amazon kindle 2 seems like Amazon.com is getting to the soul on the e-reader. Most of the infuriating issues about Kindle 1 are gone, but nearly all the strengths stay, or are accentuated. The trouble is, the distinctions are subtle. At first glance, Kindle 2′s enhancements appear really incremental; nearly trivial. Obviously the upcoming will keep color, and far better contrast than 40% – but these improvements are in E-ink’s court, not Amazon’s. I have other goods on my wish list to the potential – like being ready to fold out a larger display to superior screen bigger books. I’d just like the content material manager to permit me to create folders so I can organize my growing selection of titles. I really truly want Kindle to become ready to read PDF files natively (you still need to e-mail within your PDFs for conversion with Kindle 2). These thing will arrive, I’m sure, in time. Meanwhile, the Kindle a couple of is presently the finest e-reader within the planet. When it comes to in-the-hand usability it blows Kindle 1 away.

A few of my friends and I at work happen to be talking lately around the implications from the Kindle about the upcoming on the book. Kindle eliminates page numbers, loses the physical form, forces all books right into a typical size and form, and homogenizes the font. Obviously something is dropped compared having a printed book. Yet, what’s gained is undeniable and as impending since the weather. The ability to carry complete libraries (like the iPod did for music), as well as the capability to obtain the everyday paper, magazine, or a brand new book instantly – virtually instantly – at a savings – is actually a dream arrive legitimate. There may be little doubt that Kindle has absolutely transformed the book distribution type. The large divide looks for being Amazon’s .azw, Kindle’s file format, and .pdf, Adobe’s Acrobat format which has become pretty much universal. PDF’s universality has got the feeling of almost becoming open supply (which it’s not) because the there may be no copy protection or copyright features created into it. Whilst .pdf-only format readers are all around, and lots of .pdf titles are accessible, they have a tendency to be composed disproportionately of public domain, technical libraries, along with other arcana. That is simply because mainstream publishers don’t want to sign up to a format that does not preserve them.

Amazon’s .azw data format does, and thus Kindle has that magnificent variety of written content. Within the modern economics of improving returns, early essential leads in technologies tend to come to be major trends. Kindle’s .awz structure appears for being on the verge of getting an unsurmountable lock around the e-book market as an end result. When it comes for the actual book titles (and periodicals) you’d like to read, Amazon’s Kindle doesn’t have competition. For me, the dream of a workable ebook is noticed.

Electronic Words: The Future of Reading

March 27th, 2010

Only one or two days gone I was in my pops basement, going thru my old storage of books making an attempt to pick which ones I had more of an attachment too.  I was moving across states with the aid of a chum and his pickup, so I had to tame my inner pack rat and take just what I felt was critical, things I might basically remember not taking and regret it.  Over my 20+ years I have picked up a far amount of books, there was a point in my teen years where I could devour two or 3 a week.  Such was the life of a lonesome loser.

After I filled 2 card boxes with my most favourite novels, I could not help but think about my friends new “toy”-an Amazon  ‘Kindle’.  An Ebook rising in renown that downloads novels straight from Amazon’s Whispernet.

The newest Kindle model, Kindle DX costs just about $500, I couldn’t believe he was ready to drop that kind of scratch to read the same books he could buy for slightly less than a quarter of that cost.  How could it most likely mimic the intimate connection you can get with a good paper paged novel?  Particularly older ones, with yellowed pages and a thick, musty smell.

Ebooks had a tiny surge in appreciation in the early 2000′s, but many were only programed in one format.  So if you owned an ebook, and your favourite novel just came out on a competitors Ebook-you would just have to handle it.

Due to the Kindle’s acceptance, many big companies decided to attempt to join the competition.  Barnes & Noble introduced they’re “Nook”, which is first to be primarily based on the  ‘Android’ platform, and has a MicroSD enlargement slot for extra storage.  Apart from being much cheaper Kindle alternative, it can be hacked to add applications like Pandora, a twitter customer, Google Reader, Facebook, and a web browser.

In France, Bookeen released the ultra light Cybook Opus, featuring a paper-like high contrast appearance that can basically be read in direct daylight.  When the Cybook Opus is connected up to your personal computer it registers as a typical USB mass storage gadget so you can easily copy books without special drivers.

With the release of Apple’s iPad, came the release of the iBooks application.  Apart from having all the features of the Kindle, it can also embed video.  Still lacks USB ports, however.

While my pal raved about his dear, miniscule, electronic library, I could not help thinking how silly it was to believe that a little, thin gizmo able to download books could ever replace centuries of paper paged history.  It only took up less room, you could download any book you wanted if you wanted, generations yet to come would certainly be cheaper and better quality…I stopped my train of thought and took a close look at my stacks of physical books, all together they weighed a ton and took up so much space.  Will this generation see the passing of printed word?  I’m sure folk in the sixties couldn’t imagine life without their favorite 12-inch vinyl records, now those self same folks carry the entire discography of their favorite artist on an itty bitty iPod.

10 years back T.V’s were chunky monstrosities, now they’re paper thin with such superb quality you can count the pores on somebody’s's chin.  Ten years ago Nintendo games were still pixelated and featured stocky characters with jerky movements, now it’s basically interactive animation.  In a decade, will my  ‘bookcase’ just become  ‘shelves’?  Featuring one PDF and whatever knick knacks I throw on there to get rid of the empty space?  What will happen to libraries?  My fave used book store?

As I eventually closed the cardboard boxes and pressed down the packing tape, I could not help but think how convenient it’d be to just slip my fave book  ‘The Stand’ in my back pocket while having the remainder of my library stored on my C : drive.

A Comparison of Kindle DX and Global Kindle

January 12th, 2010
Comments Off

The most obvious difference between these electronic reading gadgets available to buy at this time is that just one works in the US while the “Global Kindle” works in over 100 countries around the planet. Obviously if you make your bed somewhere outside the States (or if you’re an American who frequently travels to countries around the world) then that makes your choice clear; You have to get the Kindle with Global Wireless.

Besides that, the obvious difference is that of their sizes. The Kindle DX Electronic Reading Device is far bigger as far it’s display and how much memory it has. It’s also far bigger as far as it’s costis concerned (as of now the DX costs more than 0 more than the Global Kindle.)

The DX is 9.7 inches and the Global Kindle is 6 inches. The bigger screen is most helpful with newspaper subscriptions (it makes it more like reading a real paper.) On the other side, the smaller size of the regular version may make it easier to carry with you wherever you go.

There is also a substantial difference when it comes to memory size. The Kindle DX can hold over 3000 books while the other version of this wireless reading device can hold up to 1,500 books, magazines, & newspapers. Although, who has that many books?! Honestly, I have a very difficult time imagining that this extra space to be needed for the majority of folks.

Another difference between these devices is that the DX has an auto-rotating screen so that if you flip the gadget on it’s side the screen automatically adjusts itself to be read horizontally (and automatically adjusts itself to be read vertically when you flip it back.)The DX also has a built in PDF reader that the smaller version does not have.

They both can download from a selection of about 350,000 books, newspapers, and magazines which can all be bought for much lower prices than their paperback alternatives. These books can all be downloaded within just 60 seconds from anywhere (they have G3 wireless so there’s no need to search for wi-fi spots.)

They both have a built in “text to speech” program which can turn all of your books into audio books.

Neither of these electronic reading devices have any monthly charges to worry about. The wireless service is provided a lot like the wireless for a GPS.

They both have a basic web browswer that lets you surf the web wherever you are. This browser is designed for text based sites such as blogs and Wikepedia.

What tool should you use to listen to audio books?

June 15th, 2009

Something really great about audio books is you have many options when it comes to listening to them.

For those of us who like to be given lots of options for doing certain things instead of being forced to adapt to just one choice, you definitely have lots of options for listening to your audio book.

If you find your self preferring sitting in your favorite chair, or sitting at your desk then cassette tape if the option for you.

But if you have a desktop or laptop computer, you might prefer listening to your audio book from it.

Pretty much all Personal computers have software built in for playing back audio books. If your PC doesn't have any (very unlikely), you can still download them completely free on the Internet. The 2 best digital audio players that you can get completely free to download from the Internet include:

- RealOne Player: This can be downloaded free of charger here; http://www.Real.com

- Windows Media Player: This is available for download free of charge on their website - http://www.Microsoft.com

But if you would rather listen to your audio book while on a walk, running, on the way to work, going around the house, going around the shops (and many more) then a portable audio player is the right way to go, preferably with an earphone.

The advantages of portable audio players have made their market grow as more and more people are starting to use them.

The most common form of these portable audio playback devices are the normal audio CD players or CD-ROM devices. These can be carried easily when you go around the shops, go for a run or when you are on the way to work for example.

The more advanced form of these portable audio playback devices for playing audio books, especially those for listening to downloadable audio books, include:

— Audio-ready PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants). Some of these PDAs include the Casio CASSIOPEIA and Compaq iPAQ. Both can be pretty expensive, costing as much as about $500 for the Compaq iPAQ and about $400 for the Casio CASSIOPEIA.

— Compatible Portable Audio Players. Some of these include the Creative’s NOMAD Jukebox 3 and the SONICblue’s Rio 900. These are cheaper than PDAs. For instance, you could purchase the SONIC blue's Rio 900 for around $250 from websites like Sonicblue.com

Finally, like I said in the start of this article, whatever tool you decide to use in listening to your audio books will depend largely on “how” you prefer listening to your audio books.

For example, the 'young and restless' teenagers can't be without the PDAs. You wouldn't either, if you were their age, right? But for the "aged and rusty" who just prefer the ease of being seated on their favorite couch, nothing can be better than listening to their favorite audio books from their "good old" cassette tape player!

A really good place that I have come across to download audio books is Spoken Network. You can find them at:

What to consider when shopping for an MP3 player

May 13th, 2009
Comments Off

Agreed that MP3 player manufacturers didn’t plan their products solely for audio books, but for music. But these days many people have embraced downloading audio books for listening to on their MP3 players.

The freedom to listen to audiobooks on the go, rather than being tied to a PC is making mp3 players incredibly popular to all ages.

If you’re not sure exactly what features you are looking for in an mp3 player, you may end up purchasing the wrong one.

I have listed below some of the things you really should think about and consider to assist you in purchasing the right player for listening to the audiobooks you have downloaded

1. The most important factor to consider when buying an MP3 player for your audio book is the way it handles interruption. Unlike music that you can start afresh when interrupted, it isn’t so much fun to have to start an audio book from the beginning after listening to it for up to 2 hours.

Please, do take some time browsing and testing the mp3 players in the store to make sure they will allow you to start again from the place where you last stopped.

You can test the MP3 player before paying for it. If it works fine, then go ahead. Keep searching until you find a player that does.

2. Ensure that the MP3 player’s volume is loud enough. You need to be sure that you will also be able to listen to the mp3 player without the earphones – and that you’ll actually be able to hear it.

You should always be able to listen to your mp3 player without headphones if you choose to. If you’re caught up in traffic and you don’t have your earphones, a good sound that you can still hear without the headphones is vital.

3. A large memory capacity is vital when searching for an mp3 player. Since you would be storing your audio book in the MP3 player, you should purchase the one that has enough memory for audio books of up to 5 hours or more.

For best value, get the MP3 players that have both flash memory and memory card.

4. Smaller mp3 players are definitely far more stylish than big bulky players. Style isn’t everything though, so make sure you don’t give up quality or durability.

5. You don’t always have to follow the ipod trend, but I would still recommend that you purchase a player which has been manufactured by a popular brand, like Creative. I definitely wouldn’t recommend buying an mp3 player just because it is cheap. Many poor quality mp3 players are made in Asian countries. A lot of these players really are not worth the bother.

Listening to audiobooks in your car can easily be achieved by purchasing a CD MP3 player, or by using an AUX socket.

As an audiobook lover myself, an excellent source that I have found for audio book downloads is Spoken Network. You can find them at:
