Does Registry Repair Software Work? A Skeptical Look at PC Improvement after Testing

August 23rd, 2009
Comments Off

I’m a pretty skeptical guy. I don’t jump on the band wagon with new fads, and I especially don’t believe in quick fixes. For this reason when websites starting hyping all the benefits of registry cleaners I couldn’t believe they were capable of improving computer performance.

The majority of sites I found during research only talked about the pros of registry repair software. Of all the sites not one explained why one was better then another or what potential down falls some registry programs might have had. I decided that if I wanted to find out the real answer I was going to have to do my own testing. So that’s what I did I setup a comparison of Registry Repair software on my own test PC to decide if these programs really worked. My results? The programs were actually pretty surprising.

Speed was Irrelevant

I timed all of the registry cleaners I tested to see how long they took to do a complete scan. Times for the full scan were all between one and ten minutes long. With most programs a second scan, which I performed each time to double check the number of errors found, seemed to be faster then the first scan.

The performance of a program and speed of a scan were unrelated. My conclusion was that the speed of the scan had nothing to do with the best registry cleaner.

Errors Found Doesn’t Mean Errors Repaired

This really surprised me. The number of errors found during the full scan of my computer wasn’t the same number of repairs, or better stated changes made to my registry. The top registry repair software completed 60-70% of the changes found in the full scan. I’d assume that to create more panic in users registry cleaners look to find as many potential errors as possible then only repair the key critical ones affecting performance.

Performance Came from Add-on Features

This was the test that really started to make me more of a believer in registry repair software. At this point I had found tiny improvements in performance after repairing all errors found in a complete scan. Once I started running the file cleaners, start-up folder optimizers and other features of each program I began getting some great results.

My boot time of Windows was reduced, as well as the startup time for many of my programs. I measured the performance improvement by timing the start up with a computer start up timer so everything was equal.

Conclusion

While my test PC wasn’t that infected with junk files and registry errors I was able to squeeze out some performance. How ever it wasn’t really from the registry repair portion of each program. The improvement came from running the additional programs that came with the software.

From my testing you can improve the performance of your computer using a registry cleaner. How ever ensure the one you buy has a guarantee, not everyone gets the same results so it’s a good idea to be able to get a refund if you’re not happy.

Bring your PC back to life by Fixing Windows Errors

When you first get your computer and install your Windows operating system everything is great. Software starts up fast, there is no real slowdown of starting up or shutting down your computer, and you'll find you don't have fix windows errors so often. This is because when you first install windows the only thing on there is the programs windows is optimized to run. Even a brand new computer over time with no new programs installed on it will slow down with time.

Almost nobody in the world uses a computer with just the basic windows operating system installed. We all add things to the computer and configure it. The moment you configure anything, even the built in programs in Windows you are making changes to the registry. It is at this point that your computer is going to start slowing down, however not always. With general use of your computer you are making all kinds of changes to the registry, but they happen in the background so you don't realize they are happening. As time goes by, entries in the windows registry can become corrupt, products that work the right way will see these errors, delete it, fix it, or replace it with a new one. How ever the majority of programs do not follow this method.

The registry is the software equivalent of “moving parts” in a mechanical device. Over time they wear down and need to be fixed. With software however you can do this with other software and in seconds the components causing problems like dead entries, corrupt entries, and so forth, can be detected and deleted.

Programs like registry mechanic and regcure are designed to not only clean out your registry but to maintain it as well. You can learn a lot at the regcure reviews and reviews of Registry mechanic sites about all the wonderful features these programs have that help you maintain your windows integrity.

One thing you need to do before running your registry cleaner on a computer that is running slow and keeps popping up errors, is to run a spyware and malware detection and removal program. Spyware and/or adware can do horrible things to your software and operating system, they can actually stop your registry repair software from doing it's job. After you have checked and cleaned out spyware you can run a registry cleaner to look for, clean and delete any registry entires that are causing your PC to run slow. Maintaining the registry with a registry cleaner program not only speeds it up but it strengthens its integrity, giving it a higher stability.

In the old days before registry cleaners you had to run your windows restore CD to repair all the errors on your PC, and this drastic move would reset everything, making it hard to enjoy your computer because you had to go back and rebuild your programs settings the way you liked it. If you're using a product such as Registry mechanic each time you turn your machine on you can set the program to scan your registry to ensure it's kept up to date and clean. It's a beautiful thing!

Windows registry is the backbone to your Windows operating system. Often overlooked or not fully understood, it is a key component to keeping your computer running well. It contains information not only for hardware, but also for device drivers, software and per-user settings.  New computers have clean, efficient registers which fill up with bits of information over time. This leads to crashes, freezing and error messages which adware and virus programs will not detect. Learning how to clean Windows registry takes only three quick steps and will keep your computer running smoothly.

First, make a registry file backup. Most registry cleaners that you can buy have a registry backup included, which is the simplest to keep your registry clutter-free. If you do not have a registry cleaner, you can create a restore point in Windows XP: Click Start, Help and Support, Undo changes to your computer using System Restore. If you choose to do this, be sure to give the restore point a name you will remember before moving to the next step.

Next, scan your Windows registry. Since there are thousands of entries involved, it would be quite a daunting task to learn how to clean Windows registry manually. Unless you are an expert, deciding which files are important and which are not would be almost impossible. Performing an initial free screening by downloading the RegCure scanning utility is recommended. It takes away any guesswork and it’s FREE and easy.

Finally, clean windows registry. Registry repair software is ideal to use instead of a manual cleaning. It will save you time and energy. After getting a free registry scan using RegCure, register the software and let it run!

By purchasing the right registry cleaner, you can schedule it to run automatically at set intervals. Experts recommend cleaning your registry at least every six months. Getting a good registry cleaner will also allow you to utilize the benefits of the software over and over again – not just a one time cleaning.

Those are the basic steps on how to clean Windows registry. Be sure to select software that is reliable, easy to use, and is available for multiple uses. One recommended cleaning software is Registry Easy – a simple, convenient way to be sure your computer is running up to speed!
